Debating drug law reform in Australia

Parts of the community are calling on North Coast politicians to hold a public forum in the region to discuss drug law reforms.

Hemp Party President, Michael Balderstone, says crime in the community would drop significantly if cannabis was legal and regulated.

Mr Balderstone says the current "war on drugs" isn't working and police and politicians know it.

"Police are frustrated, courts are packed, jails are over full and look what's happening on the streets of Sydney, all that bikie stuff. It's all drug related.

"Take the money out of it. Treat it as a health issue you know it needs regulations, it needs quality control.

"It needs rules that people will respect so young kids aren't into it. Take it off the streets" said Mr Balderstone.

MardiGrass celebrations this weekend will mark the events twentieth anniversary.

Mr Balderstone says the message has always been to legalise cannabis which is used medically in America.

"The issue is more critical than ever I have no doubt about that, I see it every day on the street here. We've created nightmares with this.

"Really we've outlawed all the best pain killing herbs which no one can control".
